Description of Workshops and Other Training
These training experiences will help health care professionals learn ways to increase and support their patients’ and clients’ motivation to engage in positive health behaviors. The workshops are activity-oriented, and so engage participants to practice skills in dyads and small groups. The intent in these workshops is for participants to sit for no more than 20 minutes at any one time while focusing on any one topic; learning to be therapeutically “motivational” and using MI skills requires active engagement and practice! Workshops are formatted to focus on skill acquisition and “fun while learning.” As a result of these workshops, participants are prepared to interact in a respectful and motivational way with adolescent, adult, and older adult patients and clients.

Full-day MI introductory training workshops are available, as are full-day and half-day Advanced MI trainings. Workshops are available for professionals and/or trainees at any level, and can be tailored to specific areas of focus, such as primary medical care, dental care, hospital practice, outpatient psychological services, preparing clients for CBT and exposure therapies, and so on.
